I BROKE YOU

By Sheila Mumbo

Looking back I think I broke you,
You told me you loved me,
But I felt it from a distance,
Knowing that I won’t sustain it,

Maybe I’m the reason you hurt,
With a façade high up to reach,
Closing up every time you’re close,
Making you regret ever meeting me,

I was afraid you’ll love me less,
Even when you held me close,
I left snow in the parts close to me,
Watched you freeze from a distance,

Maybe I say that I love you,
But act like it means nothing,
Take you round in circles,
That you curled into confusion,

Maybe I willingly abandoned you,
In the moments that mattered most,
And made deliberate mistakes,
Without realising I broke you.
