Honestly, this article is about my history and maybe your history but not in the way you think.
Disclaimer: the writer is not an expert nor in a position to tell people how to live their lives.
USA, Canada and the United Kingdom celebrate Black History Month. In case you’re just hearing about black history month, let me loop you in. Blacks or Africans in the above-named countries dedicate an entire month to learn about people of African History who shaped their history (the rest of the population can still take part). Despite this article being on history, I shall not get into the history of why it was agreed upon that an entire month should be dedicated to Black History. What I can comment on is the intention. Being an African myself, I need this in my country.
Do we know our African history? Do I know about Africans who shaped my history? Do you know about the contributions of Tom Mboya, Pio gama Pinto, Nelson Mandela, Robert Mugabe, Fela Kuti, Mo Ibrahim, Gamal Abdel Nasser, Muammar Gaddafi, Emperor Haile Selassie, Ngugi wa Thiong’o…Aki ni wengi sana. Siwezi waandika wote.
I hear syllabus history does not cut it.
I don’t know about you but I know very little.
Well then, I believe we have some learning to do!
Where are the old people?
