The Girl of Our Dreams

Looking at her resting on my lap,
She was the girl of my dreams,
But she was also the girl,
Who belonged to many like me.
Maybe she was the love of their lives too.
She looked so innocent,
Like she would never step out,
And cheat on me,
Like she had never considered it,
But the thing is, she did.

She had lied,
Betrayed the trust I had in her,
Yet I couldn’t get myself to ask her,
Why she did do it.
Maybe because I had accepted,
I wouldn’t ever be enough for her.
I thought I had everything she wanted,
But here she was,
With four others like me.

I shouldn’t have checked the messages,
From the anonymous person,
I shouldn’t have asked her for her phone,
Only to call the contacts I had received,
But if I hadn’t done that,
I wouldn’t have known,
I was simply her money mint,
And not the love of her life.

I wouldn’t have known,
How much I meant to her,
And I wouldn’t have known,
That while I worked my ass off,
To give her a better life,
That while I was suffering,
And getting the brunt of the world,
She was there with her team,
Picking me whenever she was bored.

Because for her,
I was never worthy of her love,
And maybe that messed with my head,
But maybe, just maybe,
It was the wake up call I needed.
