A 25-year-old woman was brutally assaulted in a disturbing incident in Khayelitsha after she turned down a man’s advances. She was struck in the face with a brick by the attacker, who is presently eluding law enforcement, losing an eye and breaking her nose in the process. Miss Kalubi recalls seeing the man a few times on her way home and even getting crude remarks from him each time he saw her.
Her boyfriend asked the man to leave her alone, but the persistent harasser stopped momentarily, only to show up in front of them a short while later. It was then that he slammed a brick into her face, and she fell backward and lost consciousness. Miss Kalubi later woke up while being rushed to Khayelitsha Hospital, where she received first aid and was then transferred to Tygerberg Hospital.
Doctors were forced to remove Nikita’s eye due to severe damage and a nasal fracture. While she remains in a precarious condition, her mother, Xoliswa Kalubi, is determined to be a source of strength for her.
Xoliswa, expressed her relief that her daughter survived the attack but expressed sadness that the suspect is still at large, even boasting about it. Nikita shared her concern, stating that the suspect has made threatening remarks.
“It won’t be easy, but I am glad he didn’t kill her. I’m sad that the suspect is still out there, bragging, saying if he had a gun, he could’ve killed her,” said Xoliswa.
Western Cape police spokesperson Joseph Swartbooi assured the public that the case is under thorough investigation. He mentioned that the investigation officer is actively pursuing leads to apprehend the suspect, who is currently on the run.
