Said She’d Stay

Said she’d stay,
‘I am here for you’
She even wrote it in a card,
And delivered it on my birthday.

Said,
‘Whatever it is, we’ll get through it together.’
And she hugged me,
As if to mean she meant it.

Said,
‘I’m yours forever, no one else matters’
And I tattooed her name on me
Just to make a lasting impression.

She promised
I held on to every word of it
And I smiled everyday,
Because she was mine,
And she’d stay.

But
She didn’t keep her word
Instead, she left
Before forever came.

Today marks one year
Since she went away
Six feet underground
And all I can ask is
‘Why?’
