Once upon a time,
In a young girl’s heart,
Cheer and warmth abounded.
Such lightness, such openness;
A shield from every outside threat.
In due time;
Shame was gifted,
Innocence snatched,
Doubt planted,
Heaviness bestowed.
Repeatedly, painfully,
Her heart was broken;
Pieces scattered haplessly,
From those she deemed worthy.
A girl she could no longer be.
Presently here we are;
Strength thrust upon us,
Weary from our journey,
As memory demands our attention;
For the girl we used to be.
