The Right Thing

I wonder,
I have never been a difficult child,
I was an easy child,
Coloring within the lines,
I did not know any other way to be.

Even as a teenager,
Despite the endless turmoil,
The nauseating self awareness,
I did the right thing;
Because that’s what was expected of me.

Doing the right thing is not new to me,
It is not a burden,
I am perfectly content with it.
After all, it has led me here,
I am able to look back with immense ease.

But I worry,
What will happen when I digress?
When my humanity is bare,
When I refuse to care,
What then?
