WHY HER?
Born female sentenced to service
Even before the cord is cut
the atmosphere already feels cold
Pappa foresees dowry
mama sighs in relief
for she has found a helper

growing up and having dreams
Hoping to study medicine
No one ever sees what she craves
“A nurse would be more appropriate”
Her teachers say so
but why do they insist?
“Don’t pose a threat to your suitors”

The society doesn’t want to see her leading
Lest they call her names to cut down her achievements
Her fellow women find it outrageous that she is single
They only wish to see her at the farm muddy and suckling her fifth born.

Why is it so hard for her to seek comfort
is it a sin for her to widen her horizon
why the woman?

Is gender equality going to remain but a dream?
