FAMILY, HUH?

I watch them fight,
It’s something they always do,
Like a religion,
They scream at each other,
Talk shit to each other,
But I know how it ends,
How it always ends,
Mother with a broken back,
Father with a hoarse voice,
And us,
My siblings and I,
We stay ignored as usual,
And we can’t interfere,
Because we’ll be broken too.

I want to be free,
I wish to let it all out,
I wish I’d cry,
I always feel like it,
But if I let my tears free,
Who will comfort who?
My siblings look up to me,
I am bound to comfort them,
When walls come closing in,
And the only people who should protect us,
Are too busy screaming away,
Hitting one another,
Not realizing the walls they’re pushing.

Huddling together in a corner we watch,
Father throws furniture around,
And mother,
Like a knives expert throws hers around,
Nobody remembers us,
Nobody sees us,
Nobody comes to our rescue,
Nobody comforts us,
Nobody cares about us,
Because nobody really knows,
What’s happening in here,
Thanks to the walls.

Why can’t we just be normal,
Even if our normal is hate,
Why can’t my family be normal,
Each day I make a prayer,
Each day I believe,
But each day,
Every single day,
My family stays in ruins.

Maybe we are cursed,
But if only I’d take away my siblings’ pain,
Maybe it’d be different,
Or maybe it wouldn’t,
But at least they wouldn’t have nightmares daily,
They wouldn’t have to fight demons,
Things that aren’t theirs to face,
They wouldn’t have to deal with all this,
Listening to our parents fight,
Hiding away in corners to avoid being hit,
Having to step on shattered glass on their way to sleep,
Because this emotional torture,
This is too much,
It’s overwhelming.

So much for forever,
When life itself hates us,
So much for love,
When we are scared of our parents,
So much for unity,
When fear is our lifestyle,
So much for sanity,
When borderline crazy is our always,
So much for family,
When ours is a war zone.
Family huh?
