Of Shattered Mirrors

I found an unlikely foe in the mirror,
Cruel judgments every time I showed it my face,
It revealed not the boy I could become,
But the shattered pieces of my self-esteem.

“Who would love such a feeble and weak boy!” it screamed each day,
When trying to clean the flaws away,
Disappointed to find that soap and water can’t clean the soul,
Love was a thing he thought he did not deserve.

A chronic wound deep within,
Allowing my spirit to linger between.
The stinging words of doubt,
Voices uniting to heckle,
Every conversation poking the fresh wound.

Time floats away with the mirror carried in my chest,
Why do the shards have to be so sharp that I can never rest?
Trying to piece together relationships in vain,
The broken glasses quick into action to puncture once again.

Will my eyes ever let me see myself a new,
With the truth in sight, away from the rue,
Or does the mirror continue with its hold,
Reflecting the boy who is not so bold.
