Screams tore through the thickness of the darkened night
Her terrified wails weaving a sad song through the village
She’d lost her love and her church along with it
Even the choir choked on their own tears for such a forsaken soul
Her breaths now painful chokes from her dried lungs
Holding his sleeping form in her weakening arms
He felt so light a feather would have crushed him
Trudging to that black hole they wanted to throw her babe into
She could hear the gods laugh out in maniacal derision
Her heart beat now tearing through her chest with fleeting speed
They told a tale of a sly glutton who devoured a mother’s soul
And pushed her into that casket where her only own laid
A mean trick, even for death itself.
