Salma was admitted and she had to undergo several tests as part of her treatment plan. One day a doctor and some other lady whom she’d never seen showed up. She wasn’t too curious since she’s used to seeing new faces in the ward. After the preamble, the doctor told her that the nice lady was there to speak with her. What? She had no clue why someone needed to speak with her. Many words and a few minutes later, Salma is now informed that she is HIV positive. How??? Who? When? Where? WHAAAT?????
Patrick’s dad had his first chemotherapy today. He remembers the day of diagnosis like it was yesterday. How is it possible to remember this much about a life that is not his? On that day, his world stopped, or at least, it felt like it was stopping since it is literally impossible to stop time. On one hand, Patrick was happy that a name was placed to the illness. On the other hand, of all illnesses? His father seems calm, maybe it hasn’t sank deep, or maybe he’s coping, or maybe he’s accepted and is dealing with it. Patrick knows life will change. His own mind has changed. Cancer is no longer a distant theory that affects those people. It is here, at home, with him. Patrick is now learning about cancer and changing his thoughts, actions…
Salma and Patrick are going through very different experiences which share some common features. Their whole life has changed. From behaviours, to thoughts. They’ll need to adjust, find a way to make life work. And while they breathe, make it count because it is NOT OVER YET!!!!!
