By Glady’s Gachanja
The winds came crashing everything in their way
And my lungs were left gasping for a straw of cool air to take in
the sun in my eyes died, and I felt my heart drop to the ground as I heard your words
looking me straight in the eye, you told me you needed space
but we both realized at that moment it wasn’t space that you needed
you wanted to be free of me
to shed me off like a reptile’s skin ready for a rebirth
not even a shred of emotion in your eyes visible
or was I too overcome with emotion,
that I did not notice the clear tears welling up like a dam ready to burst its banks on your eyes
you could have at least had the audacity to explain to me why
but you left me standing like a thorn tree in the desert
raw and exposed, unaware of what just happened
when you left, you took the sun with you
drowning my world in a sea of darkness
every morning I woke to the sound of crickets and birds chirping
and I smiled, excited to have our usual morning cuddles and kisses to start my day
but I rolled on to the other side only to realize that you were not with me
or were you never here?
I hated how I saw you smile across the street like you had the right to
When you squeezed my heart through a keyhole
Watching it bleed till there was no life left
You were supposed to be hurting like I was
You did not deserve a shred of peace.
But every night, I yearned for your rough broad arms
Snaking their way through my slim spine
Your tongue twirling on my soft earlobe, whispering how I turned you on
I missed your kisses down the length of my body, cleaning every part of my body like the rain
Filling ourselves of our hunger for each other till we had enough.
I felt like shit on those lonely nights after you left,
Feelings of bitterness, hatred and self-loathe overwhelmed me
I beat up myself every day, thinking I pushed you away
Or maybe you were just using me, taking and taking until you made sure I could give no more
You drained me and left me to dry like autumn leaves as you flew away
Ready for your next victim.
