Rules and principles are indispensable parts of all thriving systems. Everything must follow the required law and order if efficiency and fruitfulness are to be enhanced. This is not some abstract concept but a present reality in life. Ask drivers, and you will hear that it takes more than the desire to arrive fast. Ask the pilots, and they will tell you that they cannot, with safety, forget Bernoulli’s principle. On the same note, human minds have principles with which it works.
The human mind is a very complex organ. The inventors of computers and most sophisticated devices, without doubt, must be borrowing a lot from the design of the mental faculties. The mind works automatically from day to day and keeps the entire system in check as the central processing unit of the human body. Keeping the mind in shape and utmost working capacity is therefore of immeasurable significance.
Unfortunately, if there is an ignored organ that suffers great indifference and neglect, it is the mind. If the imagery of an uncultivated field were to be compared with an uncultured and untrained mind, the similarity would be striking. Many approach life with presumption, hoping that things will fall into place and are ever disappointed. At least, if it can work elsewhere, not so with mental culture.
The golden rule for mental health is, therefore, deliberate efforts to maintain a healthy mental tone. The human mind is like a field that needs cultivation and continuous care. It cannot be done by chance or accident. Fine and stable mental qualities are never a result of an accident but a deliberate effort to make an advancement step by step. Your work on your physical fitness and nutritional patterns is the same way you need to work on your mental health.
When athletes want to prepare for a grand finale or just any competition, they take painstaking efforts to be disciplined in their behaviors. They will train hard; they will discard junk food and replace it with healthy foods. The same course must achieve similar results in whichever path we pursue in life. This is especially real in our mental health. Don’t wait for mental health awareness campaigns or seminars. Set yourself to find out what you need to do to achieve it.
Mind is the measure of a man or a woman. Go out of your way to make things work out just like you are keen on your consumption patterns. It cannot be wished into action; it can only result from some effort. And it will surprise you just how much you can acquire by disciplined action.
