I Let You Go

I have always been scared of the dark,
Of the little things that keep me up at night.
Sometimes, I desire a little light,
A slight shadow to hide my past.
So, when he came into my life,
He lit up my world,
And my teenage heart found its wings again.

He was the light to my dark past,
Showed me places my heart had never been before,
And taught me to smile with my eyes.
But I was scared that no matter how high I soared,
I would come crumbling down.
For this was a familiar tune,
And yet my fragile heart walked into the war with no shield.

Even though my heart was scarred,
I watched this love flourish.
I held out hope for what could be,
But then a dark day rose,
A fierce storm that wrecked my soul.
I held out my sword,
But you walked away,
And a sword pierced through my heart,
So, I let you go,
Even though I desired to hold you close
