A story is told of how she left me here,
Not thinking what would shape my future clear.
To her, a burden, just a mess to mend,
She never thought how deep my wounds would send.
Here, no one resembles the other.
It seems we all come from a distant shore.
Unity helps us forget what we lack,
But still, I long for love, and it’s a fact.
Is it true that blood is thicker than the rest,
Or just a phrase we hear, with no true test?
She should have thought of where my life would go,
And the future we might share, just her and I to know.
I cherish what this place has given me,
But no one knows how much I miss being free.
What I perceive as life could be so sweet,
I dream of what lies just beyond these walls.
Is my mother black or white, I wonder so?
What of my father? Does he even know?
What language do they speak in the world I’ve missed?
Questions I ask, as my heart clenches in the mist.
Do people choose the life they want to lead?
Here, we all follow one faith, one creed.
Could there be more than just what we’ve been told?
Or is this our fate, destined to unfold?
Do people live by rules that keep them bound?
Do they queue for food, where hunger’s found?
How do they sleep, beneath the starry sky?
Do they ever have a space where they can cry?
I’m grateful for this home, this place of care,
A refuge for the outcast, struggling there.
But deep within, I long for love and life,
To someday leave and heal from all the strife
